Ryanair to close its Marseille base

Back to news

In its recent press release, Ryanair announced the closure of the airline's only French base located in Marseille (MRS). The base is to be closed from January 11th, 2011. 13 of the routes from this airport will be cancelled, 10 will remain operated by crew located on other bases.

Ryanair decided on closing the base after legal proceedings began from the French authorities. The dispute is about taxes. The 200 crew located in Marseille all receive an Irish pay. Their taxes and social insurance contributions are thus paid in Ireland. The French authorities claim that the taxes and social insurance should be paid in France even though it is contrary to the EU regulations.

The routes no longer operating include Agadir (AGA), Brest Bretagne (BES), Eindhoven (EIN), Lille (LIL), Marrakech (RAK), Nador (NDR), Nantes Atlantique (NTE), Palermo (PMO), Paris Beauvais (BVA), Tangier (TNG), Tenerife South Airport (TFS), Tours – Loire Valley (TUF) and Venice Treviso (TSF). Flights from Marseille (MRS) to Brussels (BRU), Dusseldorf (DUS), Fez – Sais (FEZ), London Stansted (STN), Madrid Barajas (MAD), La Valletta Malta (MLA), Porto (OPO), Rome Ciampino (CIA), Seville (SVQ) and Valencia (VLC) will be operated by crews from surrounding Ryanair bases.
