Lufthansa: baggage allowance 2012

Back to news

In today's episode of our series giving you summary of the baggage policies of various airlines, we will have a closer look at the German aviation giant Lufthansa.

Lufthansa transported 90 million passengers in 2010 alone so sooner or later you may end up on board in one of their planes as well!

Lufthansa hand baggage

As an economy class passenger you are permitted to have with you one item of carry-on baggage which cannot exceed the maximum size: 55×40×23 cm and the weight of 8 kg. This is not all. In addition you can carry onto the plane:

  • a foldable pushchair/children's car seat/baby buggy
  • one piece of personal hand luggage such as e.g. a shoulder bag or a laptop case up to 30×40×10 cm
  • orthopaedic aids
A good tip! Find out more about Lufthansa

Lufthansa checked baggage

Regardless of the class you are travelling in, a certain baggage allowance is included in the ticket price. In case of economy, it is 1 piece of checked luggage weighing up to 23 kg which does not exceed 158 cm.

What you should remember is the so called Most Significant Carrier rule. What it means is that the carrier which operates the longest part of the journey (in terms of mileage) determines the baggage allowance. It is important insofar as Lufthansa cooperates with a fairly big number of other carriers and the chances are you may end up on a code-share flight.

The information on free allowance for economy class traveller in Lufthanza is confusing. In some sites it says 1 bag checked baggage upto 23 kg while in others it says 2 bags weighing up to 23 kg each. Can any body make me clear with current information?

    Hi Alexander,
The most important thing is whether you travel on a Lufthansa flight all the way from BLR to DEN or a part of your journey is a codeshare flight operated by another carrier in which case the rules of the carrier in question apply.
The regular free allowance for economy on flights between USA/Canada and India is 2 bags weighing up to 23 kg each.

    good luck!
